To adequately grasp the fundamental tenets of a philosophical theory, or problem, students need to engage with the primary source themselves. I frequently use thought experiments and relevant real life situations to make philosophy more accessible to students and to show them why it matters. I encourage students to ask questions. I encourage students to think critically and to show evidence of independent thought. It’s important that they have something to add to the debate, that they find a voice. Merely rehashing what’s already been said is not doing good philosophy. OBJECTIVE: As a philosophy teacher, I want students to learn to think independently. I want them to use a reasoned approach to working out their views on a given topic and to develop the capacity to articulate their position in a reasoned manner. In my past teaching and private tutorial work, I have had success in achieving my goals as per above. I have taught logic, ethics, aesthetics, metaphysics, epistemology effectively and helped students to get good grades and write interesting papers. More than that I have succeeded in stimulating students to engage in lively dialogue about philosophical issues, to care about philosophy. I taught English as a Foreign Language in Dublin, Ireland, to adult and teenage students from Russia, Syria, Tunisia, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. This was a wonderful exercise in developing cultural sensitivity. I believe that my extensive experience, teaching both philosophy and English as a Foreign Language to non-native speakers, is highly beneficial to my effectiveness in a classroom situation. Additionally, I have been teaching yoga for over twelve years, both privately and ongoing classes and workshops internationally. Teaching yoga heightens one’s sensitivity, it is a wonderful practice in connecting to others, a skill which is necessary to be an effective teacher in any domain.
